The Resident Evil movies are garbage. Should have followed the story from the games... and people wonder why video game adaptations suck anus...

Oh yes, it should have so stuck closer to the games. After all, nothing beats a film where we get to watch endless scenes of people hiding their weapons in magic chests, mixing different coloured herbs together, fighting zombies with slow firing shotguns just so they can get that precious typewriter ribbon, and backtracking through the same corridors over and over again so they can find and put together parts of a puzzle in order to open a door or move a grandfather clock.

I loved the games, I've played most of them since the very first one hit PS1, but face facts, the games are the games, the movies are the movies, neither are perfect, and both were made for distinctly different mediums that have very different rules when it comes to what is effective and what isn't, as far as how survival horror themes work.

I know that much of the internet has a mad on hate for Paul 'W.S.' Anderson, thanks to AICN's Harry Knowles constant attacks on the guy from back in the day, drumming up all the gullible fanboys to join his crusade, and get a mad hate on for him too. And why? All because Anderson didn't want to waste his time and kiss the ass of Knowles on the set of Soldier, causing Knowles free studio paid trip to said set to fall through as a result, and he's been bitter about it ever since.

See Anderson, probably to his eternal regret, couldn't be bothered buying the positive press of AICN with the usual swag bait, like set visits and free goodies bags, despite it being seen by the studios as an incredibly cheap way to buy good press, as countless projects over the years can now attest. In fact such reach arounds to certain press members, both on and off line, are now considered just a standard (and rather cheap) part of the standard marketing expenses, so much so that even shows like Entourage have caricatured the practice and participants.

Interestingly, Harry doesn't seem to mention Anderson much any more, or try to drum up the hate against the guy the way he used to do, perhaps because he's finally grown up a bit and got over himself, or perhaps its because he figures his job is done given that a lot of the sheep on the internet have since taken up his cause. Who knows. But the fallout remains, and Anderson is still tainted by many mindless sheep and stupidly compared in the same breath to the likes of the truly untalented Uwe Boll.

And while Anderson will likely never be a great director, he doesn't deserve that, and is in fact a hell of a lot better and more deserving of his success than the likes of Tyler Perry, Albert Pyun, Dennis Dugan, Adam Shankman, Steve Carr, Jason Friedberg & Aaron Seltzer, and Brian Robbins. To name just a few. These are people who have never shown any artistic, directorial or film making talent whatsoever. People who are, at best, studio shills who know how to point the camera in kind of the right direction and do whatever their masters say, and at worst, the absolute epitome of the dumbing it down for the masses, shiny but hollow dynamic that has infested hollywood far too much these past few years.

I mean even Roland Emmerich, Eli Roth, Rob Cohen, Brett Ratner, McG and Ken Wiseman, as bad, hell, as horrible as they all usually are, have all also made a passable or stupidly entertaining film on (very rare) occasion, even if only by sheer luck or accident. And Anderson is better than any of those guys, with a better track record to boot. I mean even internet hate magnets Michael Bay and Joel Schumacher have made their share of good films, at least enough not so as not to (fairly) be on any worst ever director lists. Problem is, when they make a bad one it truly is epicly awful and worth all the scorn in the world. I mean no matter how much I like Schumacher's Tigerland, Phone Booth, Falling Down, Lost Boys or Flatliners, nothing excuses just how amazingly awful Batman Forever and Batman & Robin were, for instance. But Schumacher worst director even? Not even close.

Point is, Anderson doesn't deserve the level of vitriol he gets. He makes usually fun popcorn movies, no more, no less, and usually on a far smaller budget than it looks like on screen. Occasionally he'll do a real dog, and occasionally, like Event Horizon, he'll actually make something great, but mostly he makes passable b-movie popcorn fodder with a good eye, nice set pieces, and decent pacing. His biggest problem in my opinion isn't so much his directing, it's that he's not much of a writer, and I'd actually be interested to see what Anderson could do with an actual good script from someone else for once.

Anyway I'll see Resident Evil 4, and hope for a bit of disposable zombie killing fun, which is all I expect of this type of film anyway. We'll see if it delivers.

Rant mode off.

Sorry about the essay, what can I say, I clearly had nothing better to do at the time...

*Finishes reading ShadowMan's post. Eyes, wide open and slowly standing up from his chair and begins to clap*

AMEN BROTHER PREACH IT.

I couldn't agree more with your post. Anderson isn't a great director, nor do I think he iwll ever be a "great" director. But he isn't as bad as so many say he is. He does enjoyable and fun movies. I'm not a fanboy, cause if one of his movies is bad in my opinion, I'll say it. But for the most part I do enjoy his movies. Anyone wants BAD director look at Uwe Boll. I don't care HOW GOOD a movie looks in a preview, if it says, "Directed by Uwe Boll" I instantly lose intrest.

Hey Shadowman! The movies are nothing compared to the video-games serie. The movies would have been horror masterpiece if they followed the spirit and plot of the games. Resident Evil is more a survival adventure withhtmarish creatures than a full-action packed piece of ****. This is a story with creepy mansions with few peoples in here who want to survive against the evil who lurk in here and when the serie progressed they all lead a war against the Umbrella corporation! Is not a story of supergirls who kick zombies-ass with kicks and punch when only a scratch can turn you in one of them! The Resident Evil movies should have been 2 hours long with more creatues in it with a more darker tone and a deeper story of survival! Its clear Shadowman that you know nothing for what it take to do a true Resident Evil story!

Watch Resident Evil Degeneration THIS is a good Resident Evil adaptation and also a sequel to the video game Resident Evil 4.

okay i admit, the movies could have interpreted the games better but you know what? the movies are still pretty damb good even without the survival horror element in the mix. the games are epic in themselves but so are the movies in thier own way.

as a side note
what the hell is wrong with Wesker_1984?
does he have a vagina or something?
who doesn't like badass hot chicks kicking zombie ass? seriously dude you got problems.

something i do hope Anderson does get truly accurate is Albert Wesker. Some visual characteristics like hair and voice im not too picky about but overall atmosphere is key. He has to be the main antagonist in RE:Afterlife.
I hope he's as badass and intimadating as he was in Resident Evil 5! dodgen all those damb bullets and popping up right next to you in the dark with them glowen orange eyes, damb thats just freaky! Go Matrix Wesker go!
