SDCC '10: Will There Be a Resident Evil 5?
Source: Ryan Turek, Managing Editor, Peter Brown
July 24, 2010
When Shock Till You Drop spoke to Paul W.S. Anderson at Comic-Con a year ago, and broke the news to us that he'd be helming Resident Evil: Afterlife in 3D, he hinted that the fourth entry would kick off a new trilogy. Later, we caught up to Anderson and producer Jeremy Bolt on set and they remained hopeful that a fifth film was possible.
Do those plans still hold? Shock interviewed Anderson this afternoon, in anticipation of the big Resident Evil: Afterlife Comic-Con panel, and the director told us:
"We always take it one movie at a time. We put so much effort into them and it is a family affair. It is all about making the best possible movie now and then promoting well and getting it out there. Making sure it is seen in the right way. When the dust settles then you think about something else. For us, it is not a business, it is a passion. You don't want to start talking about the next baby until you make sure this one is okay."
Not exactly a "yes" or a "no." We'll see how Afterlife fares at the box office. As for Castlevania, a project Anderson has been involved with for some time, he says he is not involved in that anymore.

I'll wait to see how "Afterlife" ends before crossing my fingers for a fifth 'Resident Evil' film.

Reboot the series after this one! No more!! Time to give someone else a shot while actually staying true to the games!

As long as AFTERLIFE has an ending, not a cliffhanger like EXTINCTION, then they can end it. And then a reboot based on the video game's remake would rock.

Why would a reboot of the true story of the videogame be cooler than this original storyline? You will already know how the movie ends and all, thats not cool. These movies rock !

well you ask why they should make a film out of a the first game because we will already know what happens? i say they do this with books all the time and they make for great films. if they stay true to the first game and move on from there and keep it scary and jarring with a dark and gritty feel, and keep it close to the first game then it will be great. i for one would love to watch a film based off the first game that stays true too it because it was a awesome story and had cool characters, and creatures, and as for the people who have never played the games would more then likely like it alot more then what they have butcher and force fed us so far. if they can take a book and make it into a film and keep it close why not reisdent evil the first game?

i like to see things that i already love like games and comics and horror stories that i already know whats gonna happen come to life on films some times and not be changed so much. now saying that i also love to see original films but not something like resident evil. for example i loved splice it was something quite new and interesting and challenged your mind to think a little bit. i also love all of chris nolands film that do the same we need a better qaulity of film and noland really knows how to do that, and i think resident evil could be done that way as well as anything else if the writers, and director and others really sat down and thought films threw instead of just putting something out real quick without a great story, and characters crammed with non stop action and cheesy comedy instead of witty comed all for a quick buck. they say well they will pay for this crap anyways and we will get or money and they are right most people just run to them and give them their money, and we get garbage films. sorry for the rant just kinda got carried away. but its the trueth.

Well J-man, I'm guessing you're the perfect demographic for these films....brainless tards that are content with 90 minutes of chicks with guns and big explosions.
Maybe you should hook up with Michael Bay, I could see you getting on like a house on fire.
People like you are the reason why we keep getting inundated with ****ty movies.

i heard a year or 2 ago that after this 1 they were going to reboot it i hope thats true and i hope romero is involved

Doug, why do you have to resort to name calling? WTF?! J-Man didn't call anyone out or insult them. so you don't happen to like these movies. TONS and TONS of people do (myself included). i respect the fact you don't like them (and even i wish that they were more gritty horror based). and Toyland Chairman, from what i've heard this DOES indeed have a cliffhanger-ish ending. which sucks. i hate having to wait 2-3 years for a new movie.

I actually didn't mind the first two films, mindless fun. I hated the 3rd film though. I just think they've dragged out the Alice storyline as far as it needs to go. I mean she isn't even a character from the games! Why the need to focus on her?
Any praise that I have will go to Sienna Guillory. The ONLY decent casting in my eyes.
Silent Hill in my mind has set the standards for game to movie adaptations. If they're not going to stay true to the source material, then they should stay well away from it.
I apologize for the harsh comment towards J-Man, I'm just fed up with Hollywood in general. The standards are getting lower and lower, yet people are still spurring them on by coughing up the money to go and see their ****ty movies.
It's time to put the foot down.

....oh yeah, and they can get to **** with their cash cow 3D trend aswell.

Doug, i actually agree w/ you %10000 on the 3D assault on the horror genre. i f^ucking hate it! and HELL YES! Silent Hill is awesome! it's one of my all time favs! i hope the sequel ends up being as good as, if not better than, the 1st movie! i can't wait. that should be starting production any time now.

I didn't even make it throuh the first one and didn't bother with any of the others but hey, 5 why not. You never know. Maybe it will stop global warming and we will all be saved from utter doom. The utter doom being in 3-D of course.
Posted by: Doug on July 25, 2010 at 11:04:02
djblack....hell yes to that! =D

@Doug: Personally, I thought the third film was far more enjoyable than the second, which was just mind-numbingly boring, scenically, story-wise, "monster-wise," visually and otherwise. Bad casting, and consequently, bad acting from pretty much everyone except Sienna Guillory (whom I thought was simply spot-on as Jill -- I still do). At least the third movie had some kind of a concept, even though I have to say Alice's superhuman powers have never, nor will they ever, excite me in any way.
I get that some (fine -- a lot of) video game fans are angry that the RE films haven't stayed true to the story, but at the same time as these fans are tired of every new RE movie straying further from the games than the previous, *I'm* tired of constantly reading such unrestrainedly aggressive criticism towards them. I've nothing against a reboot, nor that people dislike the film, but there's no need to take the piss out on those who do (this not aimed at Doug or anyone else specifically, but in general). They are but harmless fun, after all, and not one new installment in the franchise really *prevents* a "reboot," only delays one.
I do wish they'd stop rubbing the video games in people's faces as a means of promotion, though. No wonder VG fans are irked when the games are pretty much paralleled with what looks closer to Matrix than the RE world.

great reads and i agree with most everything everyones said. we need a better qaultiy of films and that goes for all genres.

@J-Man: Have you seen any Harry Potter movies? Let me put it this way...Original source material over a so-so directors 'creation' will win anyday. There were 2 or 3 (maybe even more) Harry Potter books out before the first movie was made. You see, when something has fans (e.g. the game fans of RE) they WANT to see a movie based on the source material they love; quite strictly but with slight alterations throughout. Fans want to look out for who will be playing Jill Valentine, they want to see a leaked glimpse of the Hunter section.
Now I'm not saying RE story is oscar worthy, but with a bit of polish it would make a decent horror movie. The fans would see the stories they love acted out in live action, and the movie going audience are introduced to the REAL story of RE, not some half assed muddled mess of a movie thats story is nothing more than a bad fan-fic.

I think resident evil could still carry on to make number 6 and 7, the other movies are great and i think its the first time i can say "i cannot choose between any of the films" And thats a hard thing to, most films like matrix, jurassic park and discent should have stopped at the first one. i just hope that afterlife isn't going to let them down.
