Paramount Keen to Sequelize Paranormal Activity

This morning, Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman made it clear that Paramount Pictures (a Viacom company) is very much interested in capitalizing on the success of Paranormal Activity by following it up with a Paranormal Activity 2.

"Our team will come up with the right creative and marketing approach," Dauman said.

The man behind the film - which has become the most profitable picture ever - Oren Peli is off to make Area 51 right now. Would he be back for a sequel? Who knows, but I'm sure that dialogue has already begun - you'd be a fool to think it hasn't.

To be honest, will a sequel work? I'm not alone in pointing to Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows as a fine example as to why some sequels shouldn't be born. Paranormal Activity captures the zeitgeist of a generation fixed on shows like Ghost Hunters and does what it does very well. A sequel capturing the haunting of another couple, or family, will only be seen as a carbon copy - that is, if they choose to go that route. I think picking up where the original left off - with Katie - would only be a grave mistake.

Sound off below, is a Paranormal Activity necessary?

**** that, no, leave it as it ended and be done with it. It'll just desecrate it.

Paranormal activity is waaaaaay overrated as it is! A sequel will just suck fools money from their pockets, just like the first.

Whatever. Btw, I think PA had one of the WORST endings I have ever seen. So, who cares.

I caught all the hype and watched this in the midst of it all. Although it was way overhyped, it surprised me and I thought it was quite good.

The only options they could go with the sequel:

1. Another family or couple
2. Katie's sister (if you remember Katie said her and her sister experienced paranormal activity when they were younger...)
3. Prequel (telling the story of Katie and her sister and the beginning of the hauntings)

But as Ryan said, everything will seem as a carbon copy to those options. I think it will very difficult to top the first film. They'll have to do something so unsettling and scary it will make everyone forget about the first film.

I understand big studios want to make movies that do well...but I get nervous when a studio gets involved with an original idea and turn it around for their own gain.

They should let Peli have full control. Although, I heard that the theatrical ending was Steven Spielberg's idea. And I thought it was better than the original ending.

I guess we'll see.

Almost everything gets a sequel, so it's not a matter of if but when. They'll milk every last dollar out of this.
