Update: Universal Gives Green Light to Death Race 2

Source:Ryan Rotten, Managing Editor
November 13, 2009

Update: Producer Jeremy Bolt informs us that the sequel will shoot next year and they're considering actors for the role of Frankenstein now. The budget will be lower than the first film.

Some more on that sequel to Paul W.S. Anderson's Death Race that we broke the news about in August right here...

Universal has officially given Death Race 2 the green light based on Tony Giglio's script. The follow-up, a prequel looking into the past of the race car driver known as Frankenstein, will be developed for the DVD market.

The story is based on an idea by Anderson and a director is being sought. Giglio will not direct as previously reported; he's currently serving as a second unit director on Resident Evil: Afterlife which Anderson is at work on in Toronto.

Death Race had a good storyline it seems like a good idea to do a prequel on death race.

So I guess Mr. Statham isn't showing up for this one. No need for a straight to DVD follow up, the 1st one kicked ass. Leave it alone until you re-make that one in in 5 years. HEY HOLLYWOOD! TRY THINKING UP SOMETHING NEW!

So a different Frankenstein? How will the action look on a DVD movie? I really liked the Paul Anderson movie. I'll probably check this one out.

Considering the crew involved (the director of AVP 1? No thank you...), I wasn't really considering watching Death Race. But I found it surpassed my expectations, and I truly enjoyed it. It took a barebones premise and came up with a fantastically entertaining film.
So a sequel seemed ok. Seemed like it could be something worth watching. Just as I consider putting my money aside for it, LO AND BEHOLD!!!
The idiots decide they'll take a decent script that they've greenlit and turn it into straight-to-DVD smut.
Now, if they decided to make it on a straight-to-DVD budget, and release it theatrically with much of the same cast returning from the first, then it would make a LOT more money back. But they aren't even considering quality here. This is pure exploitation that I will not be a part of. No thank you for ruining another potentially good movie franchise, f***ers!!!

Death Race was a pretty badass re-imagining of the Roger Corman film. I thought setting it in a maximum security prison with inmates killing eachother for freedom was a good idea and not having Frankenstein in some cheesie ass S & M suit was also good to because the steel mask looked better on Stathem.

Paul W.S. Anderson said he wanted a straight sequal focusing on the Death Race taking place cross country with the kill point system in it. I guess they threw that idea out the window for a DVD prequal. :D

wow...why even bother...another franchise bites the dust...this film didn't need a sequal anyways.

that for sure.

So is it gonna be called DEATHSPORT like the original sequel to deathrace 2000.

I enjoyed the remake, this is completely unnecessary. This is a sure sign that Anderson didnt bank off the fact that he actually made a good movie for once and went on to tackle Resident Evil Aftelife, and is still thinking about Castlevania. People tend to forget the guy directed Mortal Kombat.

Part 1 was fun to watch but the storyline was just meh, without Jason statham in the picture this movie is gonna suck.

Well is Jason Statham not showing up for this one my first choice is Luke Goss !!! Should be another great hit who ever they get!!!

A prequel is a fantasitic idea ! But a straight to DVD low budget one is a screwed up lame ass decision !!!!!

Frankenstein died right. Now they are gonna look for a actor to play him.The real frankenstein who won 4 straight races and than got killed by machinegun tyrese !!My idea is, frankenstein goes on winning till he finds out he isnt really gonna win his freedom once he gets all 5 races so he plans his escape and also fakes his death !I feel this is wat they are gonna do.but why not make it huge ?!? why dvd and low budget ?! Death Race was a awesome movie !
