Lionsgate Comments on Saw VI Performance

Source:The Hollywood Reporter
November 13, 2009

Though it's really no secret, Saw VII is happening. Yet the Hollywood trades don't need to listen to genre sites like this one to learn the truth; instead they go to fellas like Lionsgate vice chairman Michael Burns for confirmation.

In a report this week, Burns told The Hollywood Reporter that Paranormal Activity is to blame for Saw VI's lackluster performance.

"As long as we make money on it we'll keep doing this," Burns said. The Saw franchise is expected to go through to an eighth entry, as revealed by Twisted Pictures Mark Burg here.

Wrong!!!!!!!!! PA is not to blamce to Saw VI lacluster performance. Everyone involved with Saw V is to blamce. Don't get me wrong, I'm a hardcore Saw fan but Saw V was just a piece of crap. Everyone from casual movie goers to the hardcore Saw fans say so.

^^^hmmm...I didn't say so. And I'm a "hardcore" fan! Aside from the Hoffman storyline, VI was basically a re-do of III. V I liked much more than VI. In fact, to me IV and VI are my least fav's...IV being THE least!

francesco, i noticed that too! i even posted (on IMDB) the Sagat thing and everyone was like "who?". LOL. i thought i was the only one! LOL. Nope, i agree part 5 is an ABOMINATION. one of the worst movies i've ever seen (and i'm pretty forgiving of bad movies!). and he can try and blame PA for the "lackluster" performance. maybe it's because these movies have overstayed their welcome? i'm thinking YES.

While I have little doubt that Paranormal Activity may have bled off a small portion of the SAW VI audience, the majority of the blame can be thrown at SAW V. And while I hated the 4th in the series, I viewed it as nothing more than a bridge to Hoffman taking over after Jigsaw's death. Personally, I enjoyed VI quite a bit.

Regardless, I will see VII on opening day and I will continue to do so until they retire the franchise.

People say Saw V is to blame. People say Paranormal Activity is to blame. How about putting the blame on something else that is entirely possible?. Like the fact people may just be tired of this never ending series.

I agree that Paranormal Activity is to blame for SAW VI not living up to the same level financial success enjoyed by previous installments. With the competition being a film that was not only in the same genre, but one that became a global must-see sensation, you don't need to follow the bread crumbs to reach the conclusion that NOTHING could prevent SAW VI from losing profits. However, to say SAW VI was not financially successful is nonsense, but that hasn't kept critics and naysayers from omitting the fact that SAW VI only cost $11 million to make and has already grossed $26 million in the U.S. alone...I bring all this up because people love to tear down anything successful and Hollywood's high-brow critics despise success in horror franchises most of all. Yet the SAW series has given us a yearly dose creepy horror at a time of year when we crave such treats most of all. Instead of following the lame Hollywood trend of forcing horror genre fans to do their trick-or-treating in August, the SAWmakers not only give fans a new bonafide horror film every Halloween, they consistently one-up every other horror franchise by keeping the same actors and following through with one connective storyline that creates an awesome sprawling saga for viewers to enjoy. So, until they do something unforgivable like throw SAW to the straight-to-DVD wolves, I will gladly pay to see every SAW installment with great anticipation.

Saw VII and Saw VIII that's enough.

Captain T, SAW should've gone straight to DVD at part 4. no question about it. and the only reason it has the same actors (and i LOVE Shawnee so forgive me Shawnee) is because they aren't doing anything else. Costas or Betsy aren't the most sought after actors to be in films. this is the main (and in most cases ONLY paycheck). i don't "love to tear down what's successfu". i LOVE SAW 1-3 but they are awful and pointless now and have DEFINITELY overstayed their welcome. and to blame PA is a joke. people would've gone to see SAW 6 whether they went to see PA 1st, that weekend, or the next weekend. so they can spin this as a "PA took our business" all they want.

Well there is still a lot of fans of the series don't forget that RIGHT.

Other than 1, I honestly couldn't tell them apart. Maybe some time off would be good for this franchise, just not long enough for a remake though please.
