Kevin Greutert Comments on Saw VII Debacle
Source: Official Site
January 26, 2010
Last night, fans of the Saw series and Paranormal Activity started clucking when Nikki Finke broke the scoop that Twisted Pictures was exercising an option and bringing Saw VI's Kevin Greutert back to the director's chair for Saw VII (thus booting out director David Hackl).
It was a slap in the face to Paramount who had recently attached Greutert to Paranormal Activity 2. Both Twisted and Paramount's sequels were going to vie for box office victory this October 22. The maneuver on Twisted's part is a power play and while we await an official comment from someone at the company, Greutert had this to say on his site.
I'm in the middle of something really terrible right now, as anyone who has come to this site probably knows. While I fight for justice in this, the important thing is to avoid giving in to hatred and anger, because these emotions are life killers.
Hopefully we will all arrive at an amicable solution. Thank you to everyone who is working with me on this.
"Fight for justice?" Sounds to us that he'd prefer to stick with Paranormal Activity 2...

Yeah...because Saw watched it's dominance slip away last year as a low-budget, ( I feel, very entertaining ) film came along and took everything away from it and now Twisted Pictures is doing everything they can to keep it from happening again...this is why I stopped watching Saw after the...oh...Idk, 3rd or 4th one, I don't even remember to be honest, Jigsaw died, I remember that, and there was a nifty shotgun necklace, other then that, GO PARANORMAL 2!!!...and as a fan of film in general, I hate to see money be the ultimate deciding sway vote in all of this, though as a businessman I understand completely.

I'd rather see another Saw than another Paranormal Inactivity. At least stuff HAPPENS in Saw. Paranormal Activity was boring as hell.

I agree completly with Oz. PA was very very boring. SAW kept you on the edge of your seat, made you jump. It was very very interesting. You had character developments and everything. But the thing is, PA had none of that. It was a bad film. BUT I think Kevin should be allowed to do whatever film he feels like doing. He cannot always do SAW forever and he did make it clear with VI that he wasn't going to do a SAW film again.

Haven't seen a Saw movie after Saw 2 and have no desire to see another one. From everyone I know who has seen the sequels, they just keep getting worse in quality and far from the greatness of the original.

i feel a bit bad for Kevin. while i'm not a huge or even big SAW fan anymore (not since part 3), Kevin seems like a very nice guy. i hope it gets smoothed out for him soon.

It sucks he's being forced to direct to Saw VII but I'm glad he's back. Sucks for David Hackl too. I was willing to give him a second shot at directing.
But Paramount is at fault too. Hiring Kevin to direct PA2 looks like they're trying to rub the success of PA in Lionsgate's face. Both studios are being immature about this.
Paramount should move PA 2 away from Saw VII. Saw has had that spot for 7 years now. Leave it alone.

Do we really need another saw movie. For that matter did we need more than one of them.

While it's obvious that Lionsgate is doing this to trip up PA2, as a Saw fan, i'm glad because Greutert's part 6 was worlds better than Hackl's part 5. I want whatever gets me the better Saw 7.

I checked, turns out I could not possibly care less. This is up there with the average E "news" story. "Lady Gaga did what??? omg!"

I love the internet. Just think, 20 years ago all this stupidity would have happened behind closed doors and we never even would have heard about it.
This is like a story line from Entourage.

This might be a hidden blessing as Paranormal really wasn't a movie that lends itself all that well to a sequel, quite like the last indie hit they tried to turn into a franchise ie Blair Witch. The Saw movies have taken an interesting and original concept and ridden it into the grave but their is some room for rejuvenation there. I'd much rather see a brand new and original idea of course but thats not how studios operate.

I just re-watched Saw VI, third time overall. And I still was giddy when the ending twists all rolled together. Saw VI is my personal favorite of all the Saw films; it was definitive in taking the best elements of all the previous entries and tying them together. Kevin is a brilliant director.
That being said, I thought he would be very keen on knowing what to do with a Paranormal Activity 2. If anyone could deliver a solid sequel, it would be Greutert. And yes, it seemed that Paramount was rubbing in their PA success in Lionsgate's face when they hired him.
Everyone, even Paramount, is willing to admit that Kevin is what they both need. I just hope that by bringing him back to Saw, he won't pull a Sam Raimi and obligingly make a film that becomes a spiteful wreck of rebellion against the studio (a la Spider-Man 3).
Greutert deserves the best after delivering Saw VI, and I hope he creates whichever film with passion and creativity.
I'm seeing both films either way.

Does anyone even think a Paranormal Activity 2 would be that good? I mean, remember Blair Witch Project 2? That movie was ultra lame.
I'd rather see a saw 7 than a PA 2. I know that the Saw series has lost some of it's punch over the years, but it was a planned series, wasn't it? Saw actually has a sort of mythology in it, whereas I think Paranormal Activity would lose some if the gimmick in a sequel.

I Hope Greutert will end up directing saw VII, Saw VI rocked! I don't think greutert will turn saw VII down, 3D will be awesome!
Why can't the director of PA1 also direct PA2?

Paranormal Activity was the least scary "scary" movie I have ever seen. How people described it as the scariest movie of all time i'll never know. And the Saw franchise really needs to die. The first 2 or 3 weren't bad but there really scraping the bottom of the barrel now.

@ JW Knight
Why should Paramount just let Lionsgate have that release date just because a new Saw movie comes out every year?
For the record, I didn't watch Paranormal Activity because I was advised by several friends it was beyond horrible and a waste of money, but I found it funny that some little movie knocked the cocky Saw franchise right on it's hind end at the box office. I was hoping it would make Lionsgate wake up and focus on something else besides their pride and joy Saw movie every single year.

I havent seen Saw 6 yet but I think they should shelve the series a few years and bring it back like Scream which is suddenly popular again. As for PA, I liked it, it was overhyped but for what they were working with they did a great job, I think a sequel will probably suck (depending on where they go with it), but I guess we'll see.

Dude it was DICK move by Paramount not Lionsgate. And don’t you want Kevin back to direct SAW VII 3D!!?????
