Williamson Has Much to Say About Scream 4

In a Vampire Diaries-related interview with Kevin Williamson, the writer of the Scream trilogy talked about the upcoming fourth installment to IESB.

Below you'll find an excerpt from their interview. Williamson says, essentially, that production needs to begin during Diaries' hiatus and that Wes Craven is going to direct. So far, Williamson is only contracted to do Scream 4 and Scream 5.

Q: Is it still a strong mystery of who this Ghostface will be?

Kevin: Well, that's the whole point of the movie. What I have always liked about this movie versus the other horror films is that I feel like there are characters. In other horror movies, you remember Michael Meyers and you remember Jason. In our film, I think you remember Sydney Prescott because Sydney Prescott's the victim and she has lasted for all three of these movies. The fun of the film is that it's Sydney Prescott. That's the difference and you care about her. I want to write a story where you actually care about our characters and it's a plot that you watch them walk through. It's not all about the next kill. It's not all about slice and dice. I was watching Saw VI on pay per view the other night and I was like, "This is really just going from one kill to the next, to the next." It's fun, but I want to tell a story.

Q: You don't think Saw has managed to keep a story going with Part VI with a dead character?

Kevin: Oh, they're doing a great job keeping the dead character, but I want to know where our lead character is, where our protagonist is and what her journey is.

Q: Is it safe to say that you won't kill Sydney Prescott off in the first 10 minutes?

Kevin: The story has to start somewhere.

Nice! I'm eagerly awaiting this. Has there been an official announcement from Wes himself or his reps that he is in fact returning to the director's chair?

I reached out to Wes' camp about two weeks ago and they were vague, but updates are supposedly coming.

He makes a good point about what bothers me regarding "SAW". None of the films have any interesting main characters... there are characters, but none that we follow in the traditional sense. It gives the films a cheap feel.

Scream isn't a horror movie. Its a suspense who done it. Horror movies, back to the 70's have been exactly what he doesn't want to make. They've been the next kill to the next kill to the next. Its about the blood guts and gore, not "oh is it him, nope he got killed, maybe her, nope, maybe this person" thats a mystery. A horror movie you already know your killer, the "mystery" is why he or she is killing. I can't beleive they are actaully going through with a 4 and 5 after the steaming pile of poo 3 was. Very interesting that they feel the need to do a 4 and 5 instead of trying something, anything, new.

I will bet my next paycheck that Sydney either dies or ends up in a coma as a result of the opening scene where she's the intended victim. Any takers?

Wow another Scream. Man i am so glad I am not a commercial horror fan. Wes really should jump on this he hasn't done anything worth a ****e since he stole Lucio Fulci's "Cat in the Brain" idea and called "New nightmare".

SilentSoze, I have to whole-heartedly disagree with you. A Nightmare On Elm Street was not all about the blood and guts. John Carpenter's Halloween wasn't about blood and guts. Texas Chainsaw Massacre didn't show a barrage of blood and guts, neither did Night of the Living Dead. Hell, I just watched Night of the Demons again after five years and the first sight of blood didn't appear till after 30 minutes in the movie. In short, horror does NOT equal blood and guts, my friend. Good horror doesn't rely on solely blood and guts, especially when people cheer that stuff on. There isn't anything scary about cheering on someone getting mutilated. You're not scared or dismayed or horrified in that sense. But when you don't know what's around the corner, or the reason why something or someone is trying to chop your head off, THAT is where the fear/horror factor comes in...

When Silence Of The Lambs came out it blew people away, far beyond horror fans, it hit the mainstream and the mainstream not wanting to be associated with you "horror losers" had to come up with a new name, they trotted out "suspense thriller" and now Scream is a "suspense who done it?" Nope, it's horror.

I disagree that Scream 3 was a "pile of poo". While it was definitely not up to par with the others, mostly because of Ehren stepping in for Kevin, it did a decent job in closing out the trilogy and keeping fans mostly happy. Plus the humor and cynicism was on point.

However, I really want Kevin to bring it back to scares, suspense and wit with this new turn of films. I'd hate to see Sidney die in the opening credits, but I really don't doubt that it will happen. Nonetheless, I'm very excited for this!

Why in the hell does EVERYBODY consider this a spoof? I've seen these movies a BILLION times, and I've never seen any kind of parody in these films... With the exception of the "halloween" scene in the first Scream, and I don't even consider that a "parody", there's nothing "funny" about these films. You people are so strange...

@ noob, most of these kids are looking for a place to vent their frustrations, so they take it out on random message boards. These are kids who listen to "marilyn manson" if they're told to take out the trash.

They're thinking Scream is too mainstream, so they will pull everything they can to mention some movie they think no one knows about. What they DONT realize, is the entire world is mainstream. Thats why they call Scream a "spoof" becasue they havent seen it. They would see it, if one of their "unknown" heroes commented on it. Other than that, its a line of ants with no leader.

Nothing funny? I love Matthew Lillard, in the first one when he and Skeet (Skreet?) were stabbing themselves the whole theater was laughing, he's talking about how pissed his parents were gonna be. Wes Craven as Freddy Krueger the janitor. Like Friday the 13th 6 and Return Of The Living dead they mixed horror and comedy in a good way.
