Aronofsky Still Attached To Robocop Reboot

At last night's Los Angeles premiere for The Wolfman, Shock got the chance to chat with screenwriter David Self about several projects he's been recently attached to. First one on our list? The long rumored Robocop reboot with Darren Aronofsky at the helm.

"I’m still involved with it and Darren Aronofsky’s still involved with it," says Self. "He’s making another movie right now (Black Swan), but we’re waiting for MGM, to sort things out since they’re a large corporation and it’s a situation where we have to be practical. We're waiting to continue with them, we hope that that happens soon and we can get back to it soon."

When asked if they were approaching the new Robocop as an unofficial sequel or a remake, Self explained, "It’s definitely not a sequel. It’s an origin story, it’s an origin to the original Robocop. So, it’s basically a 'reboot'."

Another script of the screenwriter that has made the rounds over the last few years is Deathlok, a half man/half cyborg superhero very much in the vein of Robocop based on the Marvel comic book.

The writer smirks when I ask about it. "I don’t know what’s going with that movie honestly. I haven’t talked to the producers recently about that. I did a rewrite on it several years ago and it shows up on IMDB all the time. It’s been a long while since I worked on it, but I would love to see that. I love that story and I love that character."

Hopefully, it's in the ultraviolent way it was supposed to have been (ie Frank Miller's original vision).

alright here it goes and i'm sure everyone will agree we all loved the orginal can't beat it but if there going to be rebooting it please for the love of god skip the ****** origin storys just like with the new stupid reboot to spiderman, nightmare on elm street etc..LEARN FROM THE INCREDIBLE HULK MOVIE show an origin if there must be one during the credits like if you don't no how robocop became robocop then you most likey shouldn't watch this movie and yes frank miller's original version totally agree with "Nunya" on that one

I swear to god, if I gotta hear the word "reboot" come out of Hollywood one more time, I am gonna have to go postal on that nest of over-paid studio sell-outs. Instead of "reboot", why don't they just say "unoriginal"? That "quasi-hip" lingo doesn't distract the movie going crowd from what is really happening out there, which is a shortage of originality. Now this doesn't mean that there is a shortage of great original scripts floating around out there, it just means that instead of the studios taking chances on these "original" ideas, they would rather sink their dime on something that they are guaranteed to make a certain percentage of money back on, namely all
of these "reboots". And they keep saying,"We are remaking or rebooting these films so a new generation of fans can enjoy them." Sorry, but if the "new generation" will enjoy these, then why wouldn't they enjoy the originals? With the Friday The 13th remake, did they really think that anyone who saw that film, really never saw any of the originals or at least heard of them?
It's the same with Texas Chainsaw,Halloween, and
Etc. Now to a point, I can understand remaking a very old film, in this case, The Wolfman, or any of the other classic film, for the fact that they are 50 or 60 years old, that makes sense to me, but to remake films that are merely a couple of decades old just seems stupid beyond compare, in this case Robocop. That film holds up as well today as it did in 1987, it would be and will be bordering on mental retardation to go an "screw around" with that film or as they call it "rebooting". These film-makers have got to stop this onslaught of
redundence and unoriginality and start paying these writers to "write", not "rehash" or "reboot" someone else's ideas and then take credit for them just because they tweaked it alittle here and there. Something must be done, because the masses are growing weary and angry.
I know I am not alone in this.

I'm all for more Robocop, but I am getting really p*ssed off with this ****ing 'reboot' euphemism. Reboot is remake. As each new 'reboot' get announced, the more tired and lazy the Hollywood machine reveals itself to be. If they are gunna do it, bring on the Miller vision for the movie... but maybe this reboot will be the teenage years of a misunderstood Robocop... God forbid they don't have teen appeal.. Maybe he can be a vampire too! FFS.

Spirit-Seeker - Spot on.

I just want to clear something up. With all this mention of "Frank Miller's original vision," it seems to imply that Miller CREATED Robocop. Yes, his take was cool and all, but he DIDN'T.

Posted by: Wintermute on February 10, 2010 at 08:41:58

Never implied that in the least. Would you prefer a kiddie friendly, merchandise orientated, mass appeal, Robocop-Lite version instead?

@Wintermute
No, of course not. Sorry to rile you the wrong way, no offense. I just meant it for those who mistakenly believe Miller came up with Robocop. It's weird, but I've even met people who think he created Batman!

LOL. OK, point taken. :)

MGM???

Reboot? Um, if they're just going to do the origin story again, isn't it a remake? I mean, the first Robocop did just that.

If there's anyone out there who could ruin this movie, it wouldn't be Aronofsky. Quit your damn boo hooing. It's going to be great. Either that or we could call up Rob Zombie to come put his little take on it? Shut up.
