Freddy's Back! Platinum Restarts Nightmare Franchise!

Source:Variety
January 29, 2008

Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form have been set by New Line to re-launch Freddy Krueger, the iconic psycho who haunts the subconscious dreams of teenagers and kills them in their sleep.

The trio will create a new franchise based on A Nightmare on Elm Street, the 1984 Wes Craven film.

Originally played by Robert Englund, Krueger haunted nine films and two TV series, and was New Line's most lucrative franchise until "The Lord of the Rings."

The deal comes as Bay, Fuller and Form ready for an April start for Friday the 13th, a New Line re-launch of another iconic baddie, Jason Voorhees. Marcus Nispel will direct a script by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift ("Freddy Vs. Jason").

Variety erroneously states Cloverfield's Odette Yustman will star in "Friday." We have confirmed the actress is instead appearing in the David Goyer untitled supernatural project produced by Platinum.

New Line won't hire a writer on "Nightmare" until the writer's strike ends.

i think we need to get a pettion started and have it signed by everybody who wants them to keep Robert Englund for the re-launch of Nightmare on Elm Street as Freddy Krueger, To take away his best work would be s crime to all horror fans world wide

It doesn't look like Shaye Has any power over this. His contract expires this year sometime.New line has a new President. And i think that new line won't be around much longer. Their is talk about new line merging with warner bros. So let's see what happen's.

I'm am so excited about both films. I think that it will kick ass. It's been a while since a good horror, non-CGI film has come out. Hopefully they wont go over board on the remakes. I have always been a huge fan of all these movies. Freddy still scares the **** out of me though? :{

Halloween remake cool; Friday 13thremake cool why Michael and Jason are NOT Actor driven characters Freddy is Actor driven IE No Englund No Freddy - No Freddy No Film.

I love Robert England playing Freddy also, always have and always will. But,look at it this way,If they do a remake of this movie, maybe, just maybe,it will actually be scary again.I'll admit, these past Elm Streets have been more of a comedy, than scary. My favorite one was the first one because it was actually scary.I mean,it scared the **** out of me when I was younger. The Second one was not to bad either. From Dream Warriors on,they just got funnier.I still loved them and lauged my ass off at some of them.I'm ready for another scary Freddy though. As far as Robert England goes, the man says he does not want to do it.I respect the mans wishes and whoever they do get,I hope that he can bring fear back to the franchise. It would be cool though if they could acually get his son to do it.He did play Freddy riding the skateboard in Elm St. 5.Either way,I'll be checkin it out.

lets see how many remakes can we do....we already killed psycho, texas chainsaw massacre, hills have eyes 2, the remake of part 1 was actually not bad, as well the dawn of the dead and amittyville and Halloween remakes were ok.....but now we are in 2008 and already did bad remakes of april fools day, prom night, day of the dead, and we are coming out with my bloody valentine, piranah, stepfather, and now they are doing and talking about touching on some of the greatest horror movies ever please lets leave a classic alone and do something new why ruin friday the 13th, hellraiser, nightmare on elm street, and the much talked about remake of the best one of all evil dead. please leave them alone and give all us people what we want not bad remakes to have us faithful fans ***** and moan and people who haven't seen the classics say wow that was awesome and when you mention the classics they don't have a clue what you are talking about....give us cheesy sequels and give us Freddy Vs Jason Vs Ash

one more thing what made friday the 13th so cool was jason's mother and now they are talking jason for this remake WHY keep him out of the movie or else people will go and see it and good or bad say well that was nohing like the first one stay faithful and all remakes keep the cgi to lucas good old horror is good old tom savini rob bottin and so on........also why not make ghostbusters 3 or gremlins 3 lets bring back the greats

I heard that this movie was going to be more like a prequel rather than a remake of the original. In that case yes I think they need to have someone new to play Freddy in his "early years" so to speak before he was horribly burned. I mean come on Englund is no spring chicken. But I don't see any reason why Englund could not play Freddy as the movie progresses. He was the reason why I slept with a nite light.

I think that big pun was right, the movies Robert Englund were in were automatically classic horror films. They should keep his role in the movie the movies would not be the same without him. Why would they want to not cast him as Freddy Kruger again any ways? He was the reason I had nightmares every night!! I hope they will read my email and cast Robert England as Freddy Kruger for the upcoming movies!!.

I agree there is no freddy without robert.he is freddy who half-ass idea was it to make a remake of nightmare anyway the original stands up today there is no reason to remake this movie it WILL suck without robert......

I got a better idea than getting a petition for Robert Englund back,
how about one that says the movie shouldn't be made at all
because Michael Bay needs to keep his nose out where is doesn't belong.

He ruined the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
The original was a work of art,
a shoe string budget work of art
that for its time broke all of the rules
but when mainstream takes over there's an outragious buget
where they try and cram worthless backstory into it
along with unessicary gore
that doesn't even cause scare anyone.

the same thing will happen to Freddy and Jason.
Freddy will be loaded with unessicary CGI
and non-memorable deaths.
Nothing will ever top Johnny Depp's death in the original...ever.

It was perfect in everyway.
He was sucked into his bed then
all of his blood blew out like a massive fountain covering everything.
Yeah sure that will probably be in the movie,
but it will be CGI and look fake.

I'm tired of this remake ****.
Come up with something ****ing original for once.

If anything
make another Freddy sequel and redeem him for his poor performance in Freddy vs. Jason
he had potential to have some get kills.
The original Robert Englund Freddy could've greatly benefited from CGI
as the series had some of the best special effects for it's time.

Do the same for Jason.
I have pitch for another Jason movie.
Jason meets Quintin Tarantino meets a bunch of promiscuous campers meets no story plot in 3-D
it would be the perfect gore fest.

I agree with the ones that say The elm street movies got silly. I also agree with some that say Robert Englund Should reprise his roll once again but just think the actor isn't getting much younger if they were to change the actor it should be a close match but don't change the actor yet transition it overtime hopfully not like Batman or James Bond. Transition to where its almost a perfect fit! also transition the comedic Freddie to a more sinister and so to say Dark Freddie to somehow the franchise goes through a rebirth like freddy never left as he says he is eternal! Remake? Don't copy to reinvent na not yet. Be original with creative stores Like Freddies says "AAH FRESH MEAT!!!"Hmmm "AAH Fresh Ideas" Yes But transition from Funny freddy to dark hmmm batman??? kinda but not quite! Start where Freddie versus Jason left off but not in spce like hell razor copy cat be oraginal duu. Heck I have plenty of Ideas. If I had a dollar for ever Idea that was used by someon else I would have way more than a million dollars but then again there are other similar to me and are getting payed to do it so some ok I can be giving but my best ideas they are mine to my grave unless I meet up with some friends in better places like maybe my distant cousin ahh nice thought. I hope you guys enjoyed reading this opinion.

later

thats f**ked up.robert is freddy ,i read that its "in talks"for billy bob to be casted as freddy, someone get the caveman off the movie crue,or the moron who makes these choices.what moron said yea lets just f**k up a classic by not casting the only guy to EVER play freddy.thats like taking the bark from a dog,you take robert away from freddy and fans what do u have? NOTHING im makeing sure no one i know will see it and there make sure the people thay know wont see it so.everone i know are huge horror fans and wont stand to see a classic get butcherd

ROBERT ENGLUND "IS" FREDDY........
These people are gonna lose their asses BIG TIME!
You cant replace Freddy witha different actor like you can with Jason...
The Fans will speak and they will speak loudly...this is the biggest mistake they will make in the entire history of their company....

Posted by: ENGLUNDordie on September 18, 2009 at 17:57:20

BLASPHEMY!!!

Whoever they pick to play him..i feel sorry for them,it will be the downfall of their carreer..I will refuse to go see this..if Robert Englund is not going to play freddy...then they need to move on to something else, and let Elm street R.I.P..they are gonna tarnish a legacy and destroy an American Icon.
This isnt Dracula...This isnt Jason..this is FREDDY!!!you cant replace Robert Englund!

The whole world is pissed about this..I hope they get the message before it is too late.
