Hellraiser: You Call It Remake, He Calls It Reboot

March 6, 2009

In case you didn't pick up on the vibe here and in other previously articles about Pascal Laugier's take on Hellraiser, there's a new interview with the French helmer at FilmsActu in which he states his film is a "reboot" and not a "remake." As stated earlier, Laugier is borrowing elements from the first film as well as Barker's source material "The Hellbound Heart." The only thing relatively new to glean from the interview is that Laugier says he was offered The Strangers 2, but he turned it down.

Between Nightmare and Elm Street and Hellraiser, those are the two best horror movies to "Reboot". With todays special effects they "could" be great if done correct.
I hope for the best on Hellraiser, one of my favorite horror movies has a kid.

i think it will be great a long as they don't change he overall appearance of the cenobites! remakes/reboots are fine with me just keep them as close to the original source we all know and love. more gore, and better special effects aways make a good horror movie even better.... in most cases anyway. so far i have enjoyed all the recent remakes, with the exception of prom night. some people like the classics only, and for good reason... they grew up watching these films. i myself have opened my mind and tastes in remakes of classic horror films.

It is a remake and I love the fact how they say they will not touch on the remake but still be "borrowing elements" from the original and of course we still have people saying no it will be different **** that ****. This is a remake and that's it. I doubt they will follow the book. If they go through with this piece of **** at least leave the cenobites and pinhead alone.

I hope this is done right... this series has gone through to much to suffer another bad film.

This is a remake plain and simple. I hate stupid fcking filmmakers trying to pull off using the term reboot. A reboot would be making a really good sequel to reboot the series, that possibly takes it in a different direction. But a remake is taking the first film and redoing it. Friday the 13th was a remake. Halloween was a remake. Sure they both sucked, but they took most of the concepts and characters from the originals.

The studios have the directors call it a reboot because they don't want fans getting bitter that it is being remade. I'm sure once a couple more "reboots" come out they will be just as strongly associated with crap as the word remake is now. Then we'll get a term like rejump, or some other re- word.

I seriously don't get it. What's with the director's calling every remake a "re-imagining" or "reboot"? Call it what it is, a remake.

OK, so they don't have the exact same characters as they might have had in the original, but it's the same movie.

If it's a "re-imagining" then Jason and Michael would have been Camp Counselors, popular, loved their family, and head of the neighborhood watch. Why can't Hollywierd just leave the films alone?

I don't fall for the reboot 'Wood! Don't treat us fans as dumbasses. Just admit you guy can't come up with anything new.

i hpoe this one is brutal and gory

Posted by: ttop33 on March 7, 2009 at 16:24:04

Brutal and gory is not all hellraiser is about, it also represents the thin meshy line between pleasure and pain, and how going to the extreme often means no turning back.

But yeah a re-imagining is something like dawn of the dead. Where there aren't any characters the same, the plot is entirely different. The monsters are different, the goal and themes are different. But the studio wants to make a lot more money with it so they call it by an already popular name.

This is a remake, don't fall for that crap.

Reboot, Remake, really...is there any difference?

Posted by: Bloody Scary on March 7, 2009 at 18:25:48

Remake: A different take on the original film.
Reboot: All new material with the basic concept.

I hope that the cenobites are not too different from the original ones. Sometimes these producers take a certain thing to far and it ruins the overall feel of the movie. Say for instance that they use rusty uneven nails for pinheads face, that would turn most fans away. Hopefully this will turn out ok, until then, I'll wait to see some concepts.

i remember as a kid, i was afraid to watch this movie just based on the cover when i used to see it in Blockbuster's. i never liked horror movies till i saw scary movie, then every horror movie turned into a comedy for me. apart from the ring and the grudge, i don't know why they scare me but they do.
